Peter Stafford Hayden Lawrence (1913–2005) was educated at Eton and Oxford, before returning to Eton as an assistant master and later taking over as housemaster from Hubert Hartley in 1951. In 1991 he published ‘Grizel: Grizel Hartley remembered’, a collection of letters, which represent the work of a group of Hartley’s friends who wished to see her letters in print.

This series represents the working papers of Lawrence as he collated, selected and edited Grizel Hartley’s letters for publication.
As a result, it predominantly contains photocopies and typescripts of the letters, as the originals were returned to their owners. However, some original autograph letters were retained and are included in this series.
The series also includes his typescripts of the letters and other material he consulted when working on the book.
