Title partly devised by cataloguer. Byname of 'Baddeley Codex' has been in use since the manuscript was acquired by Welbore St. Clair Baddeley in the early 20th century.

The drawings have been individually catalogued by Thomas Ashby, 'Drawings of ancient paintings in English collections, III', Papers of the British School at Rome, vol. 8 (1916), pp. 48-51.
The leaves have been foliated in roman numerals, beginning at LIV and ending at CXXXV. The first leaf is unnumbered; the second is numbered LVIII and has been bound out of order; the following two leaves are unnumbered. Leaf LIX is not present. CXXVII has been excised, and is housed in a separate portfolio at ECL-TP.20. Leaves CXXVIII to CXXXV are blank.
Images on leaves [LI]-LXXXVIII are copied from the Codex Vaticanus Latinus 3868, a 9th century manuscript of the Latin comedies of Terence. Leaves LXXXIXv and XCr bear the Aldobrandini wedding; leaves XCII-CIX bear copies of Roman wall and ceiling paintings and mosaics, including several details of the mosaic of the Temple of Fortune at Palestrina. Leaves CX-CXIX are copies of Raphael's paintings in the Vatican Loggie; CXX-CXXIV are figures from the Pyramid of Cestius. CXXV-CXXVI are wall paintings.
Pencil captions on all the drawings in two hands, 19th and 20th century.
Made for Cardinal Camillo Massimo (1620-1677), a prominent patron of Francesco Bartoli (see Whitehouse, as above). Massimo's arms are stamped on the binding.
Letter tipped into volume at leaf CXXXV: From Thomas Jenkins in Rome to William Lock of Cavendish Square in London, dated 15 September 1762. Discusses Jenkins's purchase of the volume on Lock's behalf from (?) Francesco Camillo VII Massimo, marchese di Roccasecca. Jenkins is known to have sold other objects from the 'Marchese Massimi' to Charles Townley. Includes receipt of the sale, signed by Angelo Sansonetti.
Owned by William Lock (1732-1810), art connoisseur and patron.
According to an inscription on the second flyleaf, sold at a sale in 1785, and purchased by John Peachey (1749-1816), later 2nd Baron Selsey. Engraved armorial bookplate of John Peachey, dated 1782, on second front flyleaf. Book label of West Dean Library on front pastedown. Sale catalogue entry pasted on upper left corner of flyleaf notes that the volume came from the West Dean library: West Dean, Sussex, was the seat of the Peachey family. The main library at West Dean was sold by Sotheby's in 1891, handwritten notes on the catalogue entry and on the library booklabel read 'until 1905'.

Contemporary Italian red morocco; concentric frames of gold tooled fillets, arabesque rolls, and alternating diamond, square and circle roll; centrepiece of gold stamped armorial device of Camillo Massimo; gold tooled decoration on board edges and turn-in; gold tooled decoration on spine, including lion rampant stamp; seven raised bands; red silk doublures; second set of endleaves covered in green, yellow and red marbled paper; gilt edges. Dark red cloth covered solander box with 'Baddeley Codex' stamped in gold on spine.
