Administrative / Biographical history
The small collection of records catalogued in this volume relates to the alien priory of Beckford, co. Gloucester, and mainly to its Lincolnshire dependence of Colsterworth. Beckford was a cell to the abbey of Austin Canons of Ste Barbe en Auge, in Normandy. The interest of Eton College in this property was short lived. £531 6s 8d rent from the manor of Beckford was included in the original endowment of the College of 26 March 1441. On 8 January 1445 the manor of Beckford was also surrendered to the Provost and College. On 11 August 1462 Edward IV took away this rent from Eton and gave it to his college of Fotheringay. Unlike certain other of Henry VI's bequests to Eton, which Edward IV annulled, the manor of Beckford was never recovered by the Provost and remained with Fotheringay College until its dissolution.
