Sarcophagus: Indian triumph of Dionysus
assigned by cataloguer
Description
On left Dionysus, wearing armour, is prevented by satyr (?) from falling from rearing horse. A satyr stands behind horse; two maenads on far left and one on right are in attitudes of ecstasy. Beneath horse, by feet of this third maenad, a snake emerges from open cista and makes for body of enemy lying on ground. On right an elephant moves left while a satyr holding a shield pats its head and another stretches a garland towards it. A wounded enemy lies at its feet, turning to look at Dionysus. Far right a maenad dances, a satyr tramples a cloth-like object.
