Description

Content (description)

The altar has a pedimented top, in which is a laurel wreath with flying fillets. Up each side of the altar a nude putto stands on a tall vase with his arm on his head and his cloak falling down behind him. Between the putti, just below the centre, is a rectangular panel, beneath which two nude putti hold a laurel wreath with flying fillets. At the side of these putti, and partly hidden by the vases, are three objects piled one above the other, perhaps armour. Above the panel a winged charioteer drives a quadriga to right; in the chariot Pluto holds the fainting Proserpine. The inscription inside the panel is as follows:
D M M ULPIO AUGLIB FLORIDO PATRONO/OTTIMO ET BENEMERENTI/M ULP PHILEIUSA LUMNU/ M ULP TELES ///////ORUS/ULPIA PARAMONE/LIBERTI
