Description

Content (description)

On far left maenad, wearing skin over tunic and holding jug and bowl, dances by tree on which leans a youth. He wears only a loose drape and a garland on his head, and has a thyrsus in his right hand; there is a panther by his feet and a snake in the tree by his elbow. He looks right to a maenad seatedon rocks with her arms stretched above her head, holding snakes, her back against a fluted column, which is decorated with horizontal bands of leaves and is surmounted by a tripod. On far right a youth supports a fainting maenad. Over them curve two objects (thyrsi?) from behind the column.
