Comments

The volume Bn 11, entitled Vase antiche, is devoted entirely to vases, some antique, but mostly fanciful products after the antique. A large number of the engravings have the initials AE. V and the representation of fanciful vases fall into three groups, distinguished by the inscriptions (a) sic Romae antiqui sculptores ex aere et marmore faciebant,
(b) ex Romanis antiquitatibus,
(c) Romae ab antiquo repertum

Description

Content (description)

The high foot has a knob of oak leaves. Round the top of the body is a band of floral scroll and then a band of scales, from which hang festoons of drapery. Shields and weapons are set above the drapes. Round the bottom of the body are garlands of fruit and leaves, which emerge from the mouth of a grotesque horned mask. Over the garlands are figures in various attitudes, the two flanking the mask kneeling and looking up at its horns. The shoulder of the jug is very angular and the neck flares slightly as if to form a wide mouth, but then narrows again, so that it is formed of two tiers. The lower part is decorated with flutings, on the upper part are putti among leaves. The trefoil lip is contorted. The handle is formed of two cornucopiae of fruit, which rise out of a mask on the moulding at the widest part of the neck; beneath the handle is a dolphin on the shoulder. Beneath the lip is a monster with gaping jaws, above a dolphin on the shoulder.
Beneath the jug: EX ROMANIS ANTIQUITATIBUS MDXXXXII
