Comments

The volume Bn 11, entitled Vase antiche, is devoted entirely to vases, some antique, but mostly fanciful products after the antique. A large number of the engravings have the initials AE. V and the representation of fanciful vases fall into three groups, distinguished by the inscriptions (a) sic Romae antiqui sculptores ex aere et marmore faciebant,
(b) ex Romanis antiquitatibus,
(c) Romae ab antiquo repertum
See Bn. 11. no. 48 for the same object in reverse

Description

Content (description)

The vase has broad shoulders and then tapers to the bottom, where the curve is cut short in a straight line. It stands on a low foot. The knobbed lid has floral decoration and rests on the fluted lip. Round the shoulder is a band of interlocking rings, each surmounted by a pyramidal object like a gemstone. Two lions' heads with leafy manes are set on this band; each holds a ring, of the same kind as in the band, in its mouth. Two garlands hang from beneath the lions' heads, and over the garland facing the viewer stands a lion on a leafy branch.
Beneath the vase: SIC ROMAE ANTIQUI SCULPTORES EX AERE ET MARMORE FACIEBANT.
