Description

Content (description)

The candelabrum is very ornate. At the bottom is a three-sided base with horned and bearded masks for feet, between which hang garlands. Over each mask crouches a Pan with his hands behind his back. Above the base sphinxes with scrolls instead of legs sit back to look back to look around a central pillar, which supports a 'casket' ornamented with arches, garlands and shells. At the top a Pan and Panesse copulate.
The panel on the three-sided base in this view shows a nude youth (Hercules?) holding two leaping bulls by the horn.
Beneath the candelabrum is the inscription: Sperne dilectum Veneris Sacellum/ Sanctius, Lampas, tibi munus orno/I, fove casto vigil Harleanas/Igne Camoenas.
