Content (description)

The bald and bearded philosopher sits holding a cup in his right hand, a scroll in his left. He wears a himation which leaves his right shoulder and chest bare. Viewed obliquely from right.
Below the philosopher is the inscription: ERATOSTHENES Cyreneus, umbra styli in hemiscaphio terram dimensus. Idem Phi/lologus, et Beta Eruditorum dictus, Grammaticus Poeta, Philosophus, Geometra praefuit Bibliothecae/ Alexandrinae sub Ptolemaeis Philopatore et Epiphane. Natus Olymp. CXXVI anno 1 ante AEram Christi 276 decessit anno etatis 80 vel 82. Statua visitur Romae in hortis Ludovisis.
