Content (description)

The four sarcophagi are shown one above the other.
a. Two almost nude genii or Victories fly to centre and hold a portrait roundel over a base decorated with satyr masks. Beneath the figure on left reclines a half-draped nymph, who leans on an urn and holds a rudder; there is a swan at her feet. Beneath the figure on right a half-draped male reclines with his back to the viewer, a cow reclining at his feet. At far left and right a nude putto leans on an up-turned torch.
b. The sarcophagus front is divided into four compartments by four plain columns and a palm tree on far left. In each compartment stands a draped figure with a horse moving right behind.
c. Two nude putti fly to centre and hold a roundel in which is the inscription:
D M/ FI ERMCIUM/ FECIT ALUMNE/FL ELICITATI/ QUAE BIXIT ANN S / V MESIBUS X/ DIEBUS X BE/ NEMERENTI. A flaming torch stands at far left and right.
d. In the centre is a panel decorated at the top with two garlands slung from a central mask. It bears the inscription DM/ EIDINISIUS/ VIX ANN XLIII/ M VIII DIXV/ REQESCEE IN/ PACE. On left and right of the panel an Amazon on horseback rides to the centre and fights with a nude warrior on outside. Beneath each horse lies a wounded figure.
