Description
Oversize tankard with lettering
Comments
These four large, plain tankards have incised Latin lettering, indicating that they were gifted to the College by King George III and Queen Charlotte. They are engraved with the arms of both George III and Eton College.
At least two of the four tankards were made by William and Robert Peaston, London-based goldsmiths who worked in partnership together from 1756 until c.1763.
This is one of two pairs of tankards, which together form a set of four. The maker's mark is illegible on this example and its pair. W & R Peaston is the maker of the other pair of tankards.
