Description
Altar cross set with gemstones
Comments
Cooper, one of the leading silversmiths of the Arts and Crafts Movement, made magnificent, intricate, often fanciful pieces inspired by natural forms and medieval achitecture. This silver cross, heavily decorated with trailing vines and roses and inset with yellow topazes, was commissioned for the war memorial chapel in College Chapel. The base is inscribed with the names of the boys from E.L. Vaughan's house killed in the First World War. Surviving annotated designs for this piece show that Cooper consulted a group of Eton figures including Vaughan, the Provost, the Head and Lower Masters and others.
In memoriam 25 old boys from E.L. Vaughan's house.
This cross forms part of an altar set, with a pair of candlesticks.
