Description
Silver gilt chalice on a round foot with an engraved cross in a circle on one side; the stem, with knops, rising to a circular bowl; the circular paten chased with a quatrefoil to the centre and engraved with a cross in a circle on one side
Comments
This chalice and paten were probably made in Northern France. The stem of the chalice is divided by a large ornamental knop, with lozenges that would have originally been enamelled. The paten has a quatrefoil depression, engraved with a cross on the rim.
Although among the oldest items in the silver collection, this is one of two chalices that are relatively new to the collection, having been presented to Eton College by Sir John Henry Brunel Noble (1859-1937) sometime during the first decades of the 20th century.
