Armorial board for Provost Marten
This hatchment is decorated with a coat of arms with the motto 'Spes super sidera', of the younger son of Sir Alfred George Marten (1839-1906), Sir (Clarence) Henry (Kenneth) Marten, K.C.V.O. (1872-1948). The arms were granted on 3 July 1896.
Sir Henry Marten died on 11 December 1948. A year later, it was reported in The Chronicle:
'The Provost has kindly given up two ground-floor rooms in the [Provost's] Lodge for the housing of the History Library so generously bequeathed by his predecessor to the School. The 'hatchment' over the door of the Lodge, having been up for the traditional year and a day after the death of the late Provost, has now been removed and will find a permanent home in the History Library.'
