At the Eton Loan Exhibition of 1891, held at Eton to celebrate 450 years since the foundation of the College, this work was lent by Frederick Peregrine Birch. It is described in the exhibition catalogue as follows:
'72 Wryley Birch, of Wretham Hall, Norfolk (1781-1866) in Montem Dress as Poleman. By R. Livesay, 1791.
To the waist, pale yellow long hair, with a wand, scarlet dress, wide open white collar, brown glove on hand. Boy's face in three-quarters to the left.'
