Early 17th century mid brown calf over pasteboard, sewn on four reccessed supports; bound in England, probably by Williamson of Eton; rebacked. On both covers, a central gilt stamp of the Norton/Estienne 'Noli Altum Sapere' device (42 x 34 mm.); outer border of triple fillets (blind-gilt-blind) intersecting at corners with a small gilt quatrefoil; wide squares, board edges tooled with a single blind fillet. Spine smooth and rounded, with gilt transverse fillets and tools (imitative of original design before rebacking?); endbands seemingly original but very grubby. Textblock trimmed and sprinkled red. Endpapers comprising the original leaves of plain laid paper (pastedown and flyleaf) with modern wove paper two flyleaves) in different configurations. Traces of greek silk ties, noticably splayed under pastedowns.
