Inscription in Latin on the front flyleaf of vol. 1 states that the book was given by the Earl of Kinnoul, Chancellor of the University of St Andrews, to Samuel Hepburne, in 1779, witnessed by Robert Watson, Provost. Thomas Hay, 9th Earl of Kinnoull, was Chancellor between 1765 and 1787.
