Provenance

Arms suggest this probably belonged to Christian II, Elector of Saxony (1583-1611) or Augustus II, Duke and Elector of Saxony.

Provenance

From the Colbert Library? Continuation (1650 - Cp.10.21), which seems to be bound as set with these two vols., has "Bibliothecæ Colbertinæ" on title-page.

Binding

Ca. 1600 German, gold-tooled calf, inlaid into later calf binding. Probably bound in Dresden. Corners consist of figures holding horns, and shields with arms (each different) surrounded by wreaths. Central heraldic ornament, three the same, one different (back cover, Cp.10.19). Arms of Electorate and Duchy of Saxony predominate. These arms also painted on fore-edge of Cp.10.20. For a fuller description of arms used, and binding in general, see R. Birley's Bindings IV, no. 557 (though variant central ornament not noted). Cp.10.20 has gauffered edges, including snake on T-shaped cross.
