[Copy 1]: 17th century mid-brown calf over pasteboard, sewn on four recessed supports; bound in England, possibly by Williamson of Eton. On both covers, a central gilt stamp of the Norton-Estienne 'Noli Altum Sapere' device (48 x 39 mm.); outer border of triple fillets (blind-gilt-blind) intersecting at corners with a small gilt quatrefoil, and a small broad foliate tool at inner corners; medium squares, board edges tooled with a single blind fillet. On upper cover, ?19th century lettering on spine-edge ("Newby Hall"). Spine smooth and rounded, divided into eight panels by double impressions of a gilt fillet; panels filled with a gilt foliate stamp (approx. 13 x 13 mm) flanked by the same quatrefoils as on covers; modern endbands Textblock trimmed and sprinked red. g Traces of green silk ties, noticably splayed under pastedowns.
