Ms. letter from J. V. Scholderer of the British Museum, dated 15 March 1911, regretting that he is unable to identify and date this work, and returning a sheet of ms. notes on the edition (present) to Eton.
Plain label of Eton College Library, with red initials, on front flyleaf.
Ex dono label of Eton Fellow John Reynolds, dated 1751, on front pastedown.
Sammelband. 18th-century speckled calfskin over pasteboards. Covers undecorated. Spine with five raised bands, decorated with gilt titling on red label ("Valerius Maximus"); former shelfmark and reference labels at the tail. Textblock trimmed and sprinkled red. Endpapers of undecorated laid paper; one flyleaf at both ends of the textblock.
ECL former shelfmarks: Fd.5.16, Fc.2.13, Df.3.10.
Bound with another item, shelfmark DDf.3.11(01): "Valerius Maximus cum commento Oliuerii Arzignanensis Vicentini", 1494.
Some ms. underlinings and notes: a signpost 'Virgilius' at the bottom of a2r, a longer note cut off in the process of rebinding on a2v, and a brief note on q3r (at the end of De bello Iugurthino): 'Distichon | Nosse cupi[?] vulgo non cognita fata Iugurthae: ut Plutarchu[?] ait, carcere clausuo [sic] obit'. This is a distich in Plutarch's Life of Marius. The scribe does not seem to write perfectly, as the original should read: Nosse cupis vulgo non cognita fata Iugurthae: ut Plutarchus ait, carcere clausus obit. An annotator added 'o' in front of 'ratione' on the title page (9th line).
