Covers decorated with border with flower tools at the corners (black and gold on upper cover, blind-stamped on the lower cover); gilt titling in the middle of upper cover ("Dante's Inferno", "English text by Cary", "Illustrated by Gustave Doré"). Spine rounded, decorated with black-stamped tools and gilt titling. Textblock rounded and gilted. Endpapers of black and undecorated paper; one flyleaf at both ends of the textblock.
(Copy 2) ?19th-century red morocco over ?millboards. Covers decorated with gilt fillets to form a border and panel with tools at the inner and outer corners; gilt rolls on board edges and turn-ins. Spine with five raised bands, decorated with fillets, tools and titling ("Vision of hell -- Dante" ; "Illustrated by Gustave Doré"). Textblock trimmed and gilted. Endpapers of green marbled and undecorated paper; two flyleaves at both ends of the textblock.
