Binding

?18th-century calfskin over pasteboards. Covers decorated with double gilt fillet to form a border, the outer line thicker than the other; gilt roll on board edges. Spine with six raised bands, decorated with gilt fillets, tools and titling ("Common prayer sealed"). Textblock trimmed and sprinkled red. Endpapers of marbled (pastedowns and facing flyleaves) and undecorated paper; two flyleaves at both ends of the textblock.

Copy-specific note

This is a "sealed" copy of the Book of Common Prayer of 1662, known as such due to a declaration under the Great Seal of England to be a true copy of the original manuscript now in the House of Lords. The ms. note on verso of final leaf of additional gathering, ³A⁴, testifies the examination of this volume signed by six commissioners and their seals: "We whose names are here underwritten Commision[e]rs amongst others appointed by o[u]r soveraigne Lord Charles ye Second by ye grace of God King of England, Scotland France & Ireland Defender of ye faith &c by His Highness letters patents under ye great seal of England bearing date the first day of Novemb[e]r in ye fourteenth yeare of His reigne in pursuance of a certaine act made in ye Parliament begun & held at West[minste]r: ye eighth day of May in ye thirteenth yeare of ye reigne of o[u]r s[ai]d soveraigne Lord King Charles ye Second & there continu’d untill ye nineteenth day of May in ye fourteenth yeare of His s[ai]d Ma[ies]ties reigne & thence prorog’d to ye eighteenth of February then next following intituled – An act for ye uniformity of publique prayers & administration of sacraments & other rites & ceremonies: And for establishing ye forme of making, ordaining & consecrating bishops, priests & deacons in ye Church of England – Doe certify yt we have examined & compar’d this book w[i]th ye originall & we find it a true & perfect copy. In witness whereof we have here onto sett o[u]r hands & seales this thirteenth day of Decemb[e]r in ye fourteenth yeare of ye reigne of o[u]r s[ai]d soveraigne Lord King Charles ye Second & in ye yeare of o[u]r Lord Christ one thousand six hundred sixty & two.
