The imprimatur on the titlepage is dated: Sept. 22, 1692; Madan states that despite the imprint, it probably appeared in 1692, as 'The plain dealer', which is dated 1692, is an answer to this work.
An attack on Anthony Walker's 'A true account of the author of a book entituled Eikon basilike, or, The pourtraiture of his sacred Majesty in his solitudes and sufferings', in which Walker states that the true author was John Gauden; Madan, in his 'New bibliography of the Eikon basilike', agrees that it was written by Gauden, although it probably includes some authentic writings of the King.
