Lengthy ms. note on flyleaf written in 1696 by William Fleetwood (Bishop of Ely) stating that the book had belonged to Mary Tudor and later to Mary of Modena, James II's queen, after whose flight from England it had been sold at a general auction from which an unnamed London bookseller had bought it. For translation, see ILAB Eton exhibition catalogue, 1984, pt. 1, no. 46.
The bookseller sold it to William Fleetwood for fifty three shillings and Fleetwood intended to return it to the Queen or give it to Eton College (where he was a fellow).
Supposed ms. inscription of Mary Tudor facing the picture of the Annunciation (ff.vv): "My lorde I shall desire you to pray for me Marye the queen".
?19th-century black morocco decorated with gilt tooling: two fillets to form concentric borders with floral tools at the inner corners; three blind-stamped fleur-de-lis as centre piece. Gilt-tooled spine with five raised bands.
