The letters are by Pope Gregory XV and Charles Stuart, later King of Great Britain.

The papal letter was originally published in 1623 as "The Pope's letter to the Prince in Latine, Spanish, and English." An English translation of both letters was published in 1650 as the latter part of "The King of Scotlands negotiations at Rome".

Copy 2: Sammelband. 17th century sprinkled sheep; blind double fillet to form a border on covers; single gilt fillet along board edges; red stained text block edges; rebacked in modern calf with smooth blind double-ruled spine; red leather spine label "Petitions &c 1641 Vol. VIII'; one additional flyleaf at the beginning of volume.
