[Gn.3.13] 16th century ownership inscription on t.p.: Thomas Blage. "Tendit in ardua virtus" is written on t.p. in the same hand. Possibly Thomas Blague, c.1545-1611, dean of Rochester, and compiler of an anthology of classical aphorisms.

Merton in this instance is almost certanily the village Merton near Bicester, where Francis Warre-Cornish's father Hubert Kestell Cornish was vicar from 1834. Donation inscription: d.d.
