[20], 223 [i.e. 228] p. : port. ; 15 cm. (12mo.)
Approximately 82% of Milton’s text in Book 1 is from George Downame’s "Commentarii" in Petrus Ramus "Dialecticæ libri duo" (1669 edition); in Book 2 approximately 73% derives from Downame’s text. Milton was in effect editing Downame’s commentary, purging it of postclassical examples. Cf. Lusignan, Francine. L’Artis Logicae plenior institutio de John Milton: etat de la question et position (unpublished Ph.D. thesis, University of Montreal, 1974).
The engraved portrait (A2v) is from the painting by William Faithorne and is signed: W. Dolle sculpsit.
The first leaf is blank.
Page 228 is misnumbered 223.
Leaf A11 is signed B1; A12 is unsigned and replaces B2; B1 and 2 are cancelled, with stubs and sometimes several letters of text visible.
