Ms. ownership inscription on front free-endpaper: "Gilbert Budgell his book" with date ?October 8, 1666 and motto "Delectus verborum origo eloquentiæ", and with his ms. marginalia and marks of emphasis. Gilbert Budgell, of Exeter, matriculated Trinity College, Oxford, March 1666/7 aged 16.

Laid down on rear pastedown: ownership inscription of "T: de Grey Reg: Schol. Eton: alumni" dated 14 April 1759, possibly Thomas de Grey (1748-1818), at Eton 1760-1765 (see Austen-Leigh, Eton College Register, p.154); additional inscription of Peregrine Greatheed (ca. 1748-1766), at Eton 1761-1765 (see Austen-Leigh, Eton College Register, p. 227).

Binding

17th-century brown calf binding; blind double fillet border with additional double fillet parallel to spine; rebacked in late 20th century dark brown calf, gold double fillets, four raised bands, red cloth inner joints, retaining original endpapers and red morocco spine-label; lobed circular label at tail of spine lettered in ms. "782"; gilt binder's stamp of Richard Day on rear endpaper.
