Summary, etc.
Scope and content: Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931) was a prominent French painter, illustrator, and caricaturist, widely recognised for his sharp social commentary and his significant role in the illustrated and satirical press of late 19th- and early 20th-century France. He contributed illustrations and caricatures to more than sixty periodicals, including major publications such as Gil Blas, Le Rire, La Vie Moderne, and La Revue Illustrée. During the first world war, although in his early sixties, Forain volunteered for the French Army's Section de Camouflage, a unit of professional artists who developed innovative camouflage techniques for the military. He also served as a war correspondent, producing illustrations and cartoons that were published in major newspapers. His illustrations captured the realities of trench warfare, the drama and suffering of military and civilian life, and the psychological toll of the conflict.
