Hardy wrote a preface in December 1895 for this edition, and the novel is reduced from 50 to 48 chapters (see Purdy, p. 23).

[Ku.4.15:] Newspaper cutting about this presentation copy pasted to following endpaper. It describes how Hardy sent The Animal World society an autographed copy to be sold for the benefit of their fund. The article is dated February 1928.
