(Copy 1) Ms. note on front endpaper: "H W T Viner"; with unknown coat of arms on front pastedown.

(Copy 1) Rebound in red cloth with gilt lettering on spine.

(Copy 1) Signed autograph note from Hardy to Mr Brindley, dated 28 July 1910, is tipped in to p.vii. Hardy thanks Mr Brindley for his note of congratulations regarding his O.M. It is not listed in Millgate's Collected Letters of Thomas Hardy.
(Copy 1) The original b/w photographs, presumably taken by Mr Brindley, are of original locations in and around Dorchester that inspired Hardy's settings in the novel. They include The King's Arms, the Maumbury Rings and the various cottages and paths referred to in the novel. Typed references and information about each place are pasted to the verso of the leaf. These photographs do not feature in Lea, 1913.
(Copy 1) Newspaper cuttings about Hardy and his works include debate about the sale of Henchard's wife and memorials to Hardy at the back of the vol.
(Copy 1) Envelope addressed to Sydney Cockerell by Hardy pasted to rear endpaper. It is dated 1915 in ?Brindley's hand.
