1st ed.
London : James R. Osgood McIlvaine & Co., 1896.
515 p. : etching, map ; 20 cm.
(The Wessex novels ; VIII)
Dark green bold-ribbed cloth ; front blocked in gold with TH monogram medallion ; back plain ; gold lettered on spine.
The format is uniform with Osgood's edition of the Wessex Novels (7 already published by this point).
Released on 1 November 1895. Postdated 1896.
Blind stamp of W.H. Smith & Son library on front endpaper.
ALS from Hardy to unknown recipient tipped-in to front endpaper. The letter was written at the Savile Club on a Thursday but is otherwise undated.
See Purdy, p. 86-87. This copy is possibly the first impression of the novel. Signatures A-H exist with page numbers on partially blank pages, as opposed to being an indiscriminate mix of the 2 states. This is similar to the state of Hardy's own copy, 5 presentation copies inscribed by him in November 1895 and the Bodleian, Cambridge and British Museum copies.
Macbeth-Raeburn, H. (Henry), 1860 - 1947 illustrator.
