(Copy 3) Front pastedown: armorial bookplate with initials FOB (i.e. Francesco Orazio Beggi); an unidentified green-leather label with gilted initials SBS; ex dono label of Joseph Frederick Burrell, dated 1983. Title page: ms. signature: "Bennigsen Förder" (?i.e. Rudolf Friedrich Gustav von Bennigsen-Förder, 1804-1870) ; visible shadow of a stamp that is no longer extant in the book.

(Copy 1) 19th-century quarter red straight grain morocco; nonpareil marbled paper covering boards; gold tooled title on spine; marbled endpapers; gilt edges.

(Copy 2) 16th-century armorial binding of William Cecil in vellum. Covers decorated with gilt fillet to form a border with fleurons at the outer corners; gilt coat of arms as centrepiece. Spine flat, decorated with gilt fillets and flower tools (gilding now faded). Textblock trimmed and gilted. Endpapers of undecorated laid paper; two flyleaves at both ends of the textblock.
Binding
(Copy 3) 16th-century vellum over pasteboards. Covers undecorated, but the front one shows gilted stamps with initials A.F.N. and the date 1577 in two cartouches. Spine with five raised bands, decorated with blind fillets and gilted titling on one red and one black labels ("Alliances des rois etc. de Gaule"; "Lion I. de Tournes 1561."). Textblock trimmed and dyed red. Endpapers of undecorated paper; one flyleaf at both ends of the textblock.
