On upper cover, a gilt centrepiece stamp with armorial elements of Eton College and motto, outer border of gilt fillets; on lower cover, the border only; medium-wide squares, the board edges tooled with a gilt dotted fillet; turn-ins tooled with a gilt ornamental roll. Spine with five raised bands, the panels tooled alternatively with gilt stamps of elements of the Eton armorial; gilt lettering. Endpapers comprising marbled paper (pastedown and flyleaf) and plain wove paper (flyleaf). Textblock edges trimmed and gilt at all edges.
[Copy 5]: Contemporary mahogany ?calf over ?wooden boards, unsigned but probabably by Spottiswoode; rebacked. On upper cover, an elaborate panelled design comprised of individuals tools and fillets, the tools variously ornamental or being elements of the Eton College armorial, with a central stamp depicting the statue of Henry VI; lower cover tooled identically but without the central stamp; medium-wide squares, the board edges tooled with a gilt dotted fillet; turn-ins elaborately gilt. Spine smooth and rounded, decorately chiefly with transverse gilt fillets and ornamental tools, wih gilt lettering. Endpapers comprising marbled paper (pastedown and flyleaf) and plain wove paper (flyleaf). Textblock trimmed and gilt at all edges.
