London, June 16th 1905", followed by "This copy was sent by the publishers to the author, Thomas Hardy, and given by him to his sister, Mary. Mary Hardy gave it to her first cousin, Nathaniel Sparks, from whom it passed to his son Nathaniel Sparks, R.E. Nov 23rd 1952".
