Purported to be Thomas Hardy's own copy. Inscribed in ms. on p. iii with "Nathaniel Sparks. London, June 16th 1905", followed by "This copy was sent by the publishers to the author, Thomas Hardy, and given by him to his sister, Mary. Mary Hardy gave it to her first cousin, Nathaniel Sparks, from whom it passed to his son Nathaniel Sparks, R.E. Nov 23rd 1952".
Lightly marked in pencil throughout.
Rebound, presumably by its former owner, in black cloth and card with endpapers of white paper attached. Back wrapper is tipped-in at the end of the text.
