Myers' diaries are a thorough record of his trips and expeditions abroad, reflecting his service in countries like Egypt and India as well as his personal interest in travel. He travelled extensively in Europe, Asia, the West Indies and South America.

Note

The diaries of W. J. Myers are in 32 bound leather volumes. Each volume has a manuscript label with "W. J. M's Diary", a reference number, location and date on the front cover. The 32nd volume is a notebook with "implements" on the cover.

Note

ECL has diaries with the reference nos. 1-10 (including 6A), 15-23, 25-35. Nos. 11-14 and 24 are missing.

Provenance

William Joseph Myers (1858-1899) was an army officer and collector of antiquities. He attended Eton College and donated generously to the College after he left. His most important collection was of Egyptian antiquities, purchased during service in Egypt and on private visits there. Myers bequeathed his collection to Eton College to form part of Eton's education and to inspire future generations.
