16th-century blind-panelled calf over wooden boards; brass clasps and catches on leather straps; one leather and parchment thumb tab on leaf AA1; five double sewing supports; top spine compartment painted white with shelfmark "B.30" in black; second compartment painted red with title parchment "Lud. Catus. Vita Xii." in black endbands. On the front cover a rectangular centre ornament formed by impressions of a foliate tool and containing a column of three stamps shaped like an armorial shield flanked on either side by smaller lozenges containing eagles and lions; outer border and inner frames of broad fillets flanked by thinner fillets; the inner compartment divided by diagonals with the compartments containing impressions of fleur-de-lys and lions in lozenges, and circular stamps containing letters; the outer frame contains foliate tools with circular tools of the four evangelists in the corner compartments; at the foot of this, two heart-shaped stamps containing the letters "H" and "G". On the back cover, outer border and inner frames of broad fillets flanked by thinner fillets; the inner compartment divided by diagonals; the compartments containing impressions of the same stamp shaped like an armorial shield, round and rectangular stamps containing a rose, the lamb and flag, an angel, letters and other motifs; also a wishbone shaped tool.
