Note
Collection formed by George Temple Nugent Grenville, marquis of Buckingham, from various sources (Thomas Astle's collection, Charles O'Conor's Irish mss., the Essex papers and mss.). Extended by Richard, 1st duke of Buckingham and Chandos, and sold in 1849 by Richard, the 2nd duke, to Bertram, earl of Ashburnham. Purchased in 1883 from the estate of the latter by the British Museum, the Irish mss. being transferred to the library of the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin. A catalogue of the collection was issued by the British Museum in 1895-96.

The 'Appendix To Vol. I. - Press II.' (bound here at the end of v.1) was issued in a separate volume, with half-title reading 'Appendix to vol. I. of the catalogue of manuscripts in Stowe Library. ...' dated 1819.

Provenance
Unsigned letter tipped in at front of v.1 dated Stowe, November 1826, presenting "the Irish chronicles translated from the originals in the library at Stowe" [i.e. probably the the "Rerum Hibernicarum scriptores veteres", 4v., 1814-1826] to Eton College as a gift from the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos.

ALs signed "Chandos Buckingham" tipped in at front of v.2, dated Stowe, 13 February 1820 to the Provost, Eton College, presenting "the catalogue of the manuscripts in my library" to "the venerable institution to which I am so sincerely attached".
