Ms. inscription: "F. T. A. Ashton-Gwatkin, with the friendly regard of the author's [Evelyn Waugh] father, [signed] Arthur Waugh. October : xxx : 1941. "Experimentum alii faciant in corpore vili: Ridetem verum dicere nulla vetant."" The beginning of the Latin phrase has subsequently been corrected in pencil to 'experimenta'.
Loose ALS from the author's father, Arthur Waugh, to Ashton-Gwatkin, dated All Soul's Day 1941, directing the Latin ms. inscription to be altered to 'experimenta'.
