19th century dark green velvet; elaborate gold-tooled borders with vine motif; gold-tooled royal crest on upper cover and Prussian eagle on lower cover; green velvet turn-ins; ivory moiré silk doublures lined in gold braid; brass clasps; gilt-fore-edges. Binder's stamp on p. 155: "D. Schwartz jun. Buchbinder M[ei]st[e]r in Berlin".

Note

Housed in original box with covering of green leather with gold-tooled title on upper board within gold-tooled interlaced frame with black leather inlays, interior padded and lined with ivory moiré silk with ivory velvet and gold braid around the perimeter.

Provenance

Inscription of Friedrich Wilhelm IV, King of Prussia dated Berlin, 18 June 1844, presenting "das Heldengedicht des Deutschen Volkes" [the hero poem of the German people] to the school at Eton as the guardian of the hopes of the future generation and "der Bewahrterin Altsächsischen Sinnes" [the preserver of old-Saxon intellect], in memory of his visit in January 1842.

Provenance

Loosely inserted ALs from Christian Karl Josias von Bunsen, Baron von Bunsen to Dr Hawtrey, Eton College, dated 22 April 1844, concerning the presentation of one of the two vellum copies to Eton College on behalf of the King of Prussia; with sealed, embossed and postmarked envelope.
