Inscription in late sixteenth or early seventeenth century secretary hand: This ys Thomas Smyth Booke he that stell yt is a th[ief? - page trimmed and text lost]. yt ded cost him at londen ii6. Further marginal annotations in the same hand throughout, and a note on the verso of the final page recording totals for the purchase and sale of a farm.

Binding

Contemporary or seventeenth century mid brown calf; two concentric triple fillet frames, blind tooled with the central line gold tooled; gold tooled fleur-de-lys ornaments at corners of inner frame; gold tooled centrepiece of the royal arms; spine with possibly later gold tooled fleurons; black morocco spine label; trace of a chain clasp; red stained edges; number III written in ink on fore-edge; four raised bands.
