Note

100 diaries from 1802 to 1855, relating to travels around England and Europe, and living in Eton. They contain information about daily life, journeys and distances travelled, and lists dates of correspondence to/from Margaretta Brown and expenditure. Some journals list dates of specific events, such as birthdays and weddings, and others have addresses of individuals recorded.

Each diary is numbered and the date range covered is written in manuscript on the cover ; most entries have the date written in the margin.

Box 9 and additional 3 boxes of miscellaneous items: consisting of journals, papers, and almanacks that relate to Mary, Frances, Charles, and William Brown, Emma Keate, Richard and Walter Durnford, H.E. Selby, Austen Leigh, and C.G. des Graz ; printed handlist of miscellaneous materials inside.

Provenance

Margaretta Brown was the sister-in-law of Dr Keate (1773-1852, assistant master 1795-1802; Lower Master 1802-1809; Head Master at Eton 1809-1834).

Binding

Diaries predominantly bound in contempory leather (red/brown) or half/quarter bound with marbled paper ; metal clasps.

Copy-specific note

Ms. paper note in box 3: "The diary is the property of Mrs Edith Keate, M.B.E. who in March 1944 was living at [unread] Graham, East Hill Lodge, Charminster, Dorchester. Mar. 13 1944".
