One autograph ms. by Robert Birley which was written for Paul Trewhela's parents, in response to his trial in April 1965. It in housed in its original brown envelope which, as explained in the accompanying document by Paul Trewhela from 2009, has writting (in capital letters) by Trewhela's mother, Evelyn Levision Trewhela, and the writing on the lower portion of the envelope by Trewhela.
Birley's autograph ms. is accompanied by two associated printed documents: "A document by Sir Robert Birley to be presented to College Library, Eton College" by Paul Trewhela, signed and dated 17th January 2009, from an address in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire; and, "Paul Trewhela: St Michael award citation: 06 June 2008" printed on paper from Michaelhouse School, South Africa.
Scope and content: 3 documents (one autograph ms. and two printed) written by, and about, both Robert Birley and Paul Trewhela; the autograph ms. was written in 1965 and the printed documents produced in 2008 and 2009.

Robert Birley (1903-1982) was a history master at Eton 1926-1935 after which time he left to become headmaster of Chaterhouse, until 1947. After the Second World War he was appointed educational advisor to the Allied Control Commission for Germany. Two years later he became headmaster of Eton, a post he retained until 1963. From 1964-1967 he was visiting professor of education at the Universty of the Witwatersrand, and was head of the social science and humanities department at City University, London 1967-1971.
