Modern letters in French and English. Divided into two parts. Part. I. contains fifty letters, with their answers, on a variety of similar subjects, equally entertaning and instructive. Part. II. includes some observations on commercial stile, with models of letters, bills, &c. relative to the mercantile business. To which are annexed accurate directions with regard to the proper form of writing to superiors, equals, and inferiors. The whole designed for the instruction and improvement of such young gentlemen and ladies as are desirous of acquiring the true style and exact manner of French epistolary correspondence. Engraved armorial bookplate of Thomas Dampier. Either that of Thomas Dampier (d. 1777), lower master at Eton College, later dean of Durham, or his son, Thomas Dampier (1749-1812), Eton-educated bibliophile, later bishop of Ely.

Contemporary red morocco; gold tooled border of three decorative rolls; flower fleurons as cornerpieces; gold tooled leaf and zigzag roll on board edges; gold tooled decoration on spine; black morocco spine label with gold tooled letters and triple fillet; five raised bands; gilt edges; blue, red and yellow nonpareil marbled endpapers.
