ECL copy is a variant, catalogued from copy wanting the initial leaf A1 with portrait on the recto and half-title reading "The history of the church and state of Scotland, the first part. In seven books." on the verso.
Intended to have been issued with Burnet, Gilbert. The memoires of the lives and actions of James and William Dukes of Hamilton and Castleherald ... MDCLXXVII.
With half-title on the recto of A1 and an etched portrait of the author on the verso.
Portrait of Charles I printed on a4r, signed: G Faithorne excud. ESTC reports this as a plate; conjugation visible in copy held at All Souls College, Oxford.
A variant (copy held at Christ Church, Oxford) lacks the portrait of Charles I, but has an engraved folding map (plate) of Scotland with title "Scotia regnum". Another variant (copy at St Edmund Hall, Oxford) has another state of the portrait of the author (lacking the date, but bearing the signature of Wenceslaus Hollar), with no half-title on the recto and clearly an inserted leaf.
ECL copy is a variant having the portrait of Charles I and the double-page engraved map of Scotland with title "Scotia regnum".
ESTC records title-page for the appendix on chi1 recto; ²A1r bears a divisional title for the appendix. chi1 should correctly be bound after ²A2, but is sometimes found before that leaf. This is absent in ECL copy.
ECL copy is variant having "An appendix to The history of the Church of Scotland." commencing on ²B1 with caption title. It comprises 31 pages followed by [3] unnumbered pages containing 'A catalogue of some books reprinted, and of other new books printed since the Fire, and sold by R. Royston, ...' Attributed by Wing to Thomas Middleton (Wing M1990).
