Proprietor and editor: Edward Gordon Craig, who also supplied most of the content. More than 60 pseudonyms used by Craig in the publication are listed by Ifan Kyrle Fletcher and Arnold Rood in: Edward Gordon Craig: a bibliography (London: Society for Theatre Research, 1967), p. 62.
Subtitle varies. For most issues : The journal of the art of the theatre (or variants, e.g. The quarterly journal ... [etc.]). During Vol. 8 (1918-1919) subtitled : A monthly leaflet of the art of the theatre.
Publication suspended : August 1914 - April 1915 ; June 1915 - February 1918 ; May 1919 - 1923.
Vol. 1 contains 12 monthly issues (March 1908-February 1909), the numbers for May and June being issued together. Vols. 2 (1909-1910) and 3 (1910-1911) contain 4 quarterly issues numbered 1-3 (July), 4-6 (October), 7-9 (January) and 10-12 (April). Vols. 4 (1911-1912), 5 (1912-1913), and 6 (1913-1914) contains quarterly issues numbered 1 (July), 2 (October), 3 (January) and 4 (April). Vol. 7 contains issues numbered 1 (July 1914) and 2 (May 1915). Vol. 8 contains twelve monthly bifolia, undated except with a copyright date on the last page (March 1918-April 1919). Vol. 9 (1923) is an annual, undivided into issues. Vols. 10 (1924)-15 (1929) are each divided into four quarterly issues. Vol. 13 (1927) numbered 12 bis as issued in wrappers, corrected to 13 in the bound volumes.
Published from Florence, but with articles almost entirely in English (with very occasional ones in Italian and French).
Issued in printed wrappers with woodcut decorations, except for vol. 8 which was unbound. Also issued complete in full vellum boards paper boards with vellum spines, with title pages and contents or index lists; from vol. 7 also issued in paper boards with canvas spines. Also issued in limited 'de luxe' editions; vols. 4-7 also in 'large paper' editions. See Fletcher and Rood for details.

Summary: One of the most internationally influentual theatre journals of the period, innovative in its coverage of avant-garde developments in the theatrical world (and also in art and literature). It was dominated throughout its life by the interests and opinions of Edward Gordon Craig, its proprietor and editor, who also wrote most of the articles under numerous pseudonyms, designed the layout, and contributed many of the illustrations.

[Copy 1] ECL holds a set in wrappers, made up of copies of the ordinary, 'de luxe' or 'large paper' editions. This set lacks vol. 2 no. 1-3 (July 1909) and vol. 8, no. 12. It includes duplicates of vol. 1, nos. May-June 1908, December 1908 and February 1909, and of vol. 8, nos. 9-10.
[Copy 2] ECL additionally holds a set of vols 1-11 as issued bound in full vellum boards or paper boards with vellum spines. This set includes a bound volume of covers and some ephemera, 1911-1915. It has been made up to a complete set with separately acquired copies of vols 12-15; there is also a duplicate copy of vol 15.
[Copy 3] ECL additionally holds individual association copies including a set of vol. 1 only collected by Edward Carrick Craig in a cardboard folder (Kc.4.15); loose copies of vol. 6, nos. 2 (large paper) and 4 with annotations by Edward Gordon Craig (Kc.4.16-Kc.4.17); Edward Gordon Craig's office copy of vol. 10, no. 1 (Kc.4.18); and Edward Carrick Craig's copy of the 1924 prospectus (16 pp.) with his annotation: 'My first "paste up" job i.e. type setting on paper with a pair of sissors [sic] & a paste pot" (Kc.4.19).
[Copy 4] ECL additionally holds a small number of further copies in wrappers of the ordinary, 'de luxe' or large paper issues, including: vol. 6 nos. 1-4, vol. 7 no. 1, vol. 10 nos. 1-4, vol. 11 no. 3, vol. 12 nos. 1-2, vol. 12 bis (i.e. 13) no. 1, vol. 15 no. 12 (Kc.1); vol. 9 in boards with canvas spine (2 copies, Kc.3.15-16); vol. 14 in boards with canvas spine (Kc.3.17); vol. 15 in boards with vellum spine (Kc.3.14). There are also 4 copies of the prospectus for vol. 4, 3 copies of the prospectus for the Society of the Theatre (one with prices altered in ms.), and the preliminary prospectus for Gordon Craig's School for the Art of the Theatre.
There is also an envelope of ephemera etc. including loose copies of prospectuses, announcements, insertions and supplements removed from the issues, office stationery and printed forms, and correspondence in the Edward Gordon Collections, ECL MS 685/box 'Play programmes and ephemera'.
A copy of "The art of the theatre. The second dialogue, by Gordon Craig", extracted from vol. 2, nos. 7-9 (Jan. 1910), pp. 105-126 and presented to Craig's daughter Nelly, is separately catalogued.
