Early 16th century English mid brown calf; blind tooled triple fillet border; frame of blind tooled triple fillet and wivern and bird roll (Oldham AN.h(1) 564); central panel of cross-hatched blind tooled triple fillet, with pineapple ornament (Oldham A. (2) 960 in each compartment and extending beyond the frame; wooden boards; remains of tacks for chain and for clasps, left to right fastenings; horn plate over paper label on rear board, secured with brass tacks; 20th century rebacking with blind tooled single fillet; four raised bands; title written in ink on fore-edge and tail edge; 20th century endpapers, with earlier endpapers preserved (late 15th century binders' waste). 20th century light brown buckram covered solander box.
The binders' waste consists of four sheets of an abridgement of a papal bull, which confirmed the marriage of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York and established Henry's succession; it occurs in two settings, both printed twice on the same sheet. ESTC S1247, printed by Wynkyn de Worde, 1495. Another sheet of these was removed when the binding was restored, and is now shelved at DDh.6.11.
