MS 93 - MS 95
[Continuation shelfmark] MS 94
De nobilitate et ortu heroum : manuscript.
Other title: De ortu et institucione heroum, sive heraldorum.
Augsburg, 1541-1545.
3 volumes : parchment, paper : illustrated ; 51 x 39 cm.
Title taken from M.R. James, and follows the spine title. A possible formal title is given on fol. XXIVr: 'De ortu et institucione heroum, sive heraldorum'.
Foliation of vol. 1: I-XV, XV, XVa, XVI-XXXIII, 6- 219 leaves.
Complete foliation of the preliminary leaves of vol. 1 given in pencil in a modern hand. Traces of an earlier but inconsistent foliation in ink: fol. IX bears '2'; fol. XXIV = '4' (partly trimmed); fol. XXVIII = '5', and fol. 6 follows fol. XXXIII. The ink foliation continues on the following pages, but some figures have been lost in a later trimming.
Foliation of vol. 2: [8], 3, [2], 5-15, [2], 17, [2], 19-42, 44-68, 70, 69, 71-198, 200-203?.
Foliation of vol. 3: 221, 226-227, 227a, 278-289, 289a, 290-293, 293a, 294-345, 347-358, 361-380, 383-388, 390-407, 407a, 408-413, [12] leaves.
The volume numbers have been designated according to the spine labels. Volume 2 may be a continuation of MS 92, rather than part of 'De nobilitate et ortu heroum'. It bears a formal title on fol. [8]r of 'Sentencia heroaldi'. Alternatively, it may be the first volume of this set, since the foliation sequence of volumes 1 and 3 are sequential.
Dates of production inferred from MS 92, also produced by Hans Tirol.
Chiefly on paper, but with some folded leaves on vellum. In vol. 1, the folded leaves have been numbered as a single leaf in the ink foliation sequence.
Heraldic devices and occasional figures throughout, based on woodcut outlines which have been coloured and illuminated in gold and silver.
Indices in each volume.
Written in parallel Latin and German text: Latin written in an italic hand, and German in secretary hand with extensive flourishes.
These volumes belongs with a further volume produced by Hans Tirol, entitled 'De antiquitate': Eton MS 92.
Written by Hans Tirol and intended as a gift to Henry VIII, whose arms appear beneath the dedication on f. [8]r. The donor was probably Jakob Hörproth, consul of Augsburg.
James notes in the interleaved copy of his catalogue that the manuscript had belonged to Thomas Jett, FSA. Thomas Hearne reports in his Remarks and collections that he saw it in Jetts' collection on 9 Oct 1722, having bought it from 'Mr Stebbing'. Jetts' books were sold in 1731.
Inscription on front pastedown indicating that MSS 93-95 were given by Henry Temple, first Viscount Palmerston (1672/3-1757), to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742, whose library is now at Blickling House).
Printed label on front pastedown recording the donation of the volumes by Lord Palmerston to Eton College in 1750, they having been returned to him by Richard Ellys's widow.
Transcription of provenance information provided by James.
Binding restored at the British Museum in 1934-35, according to note in interleaved James.
Previous shelfmarks: Bl.1.2-4.
