Volume of despatches from the office of the Secrétariat d'Etat aux affaires étrangères. At this period the Secretary was Raymond Phélypeaux, seigneur d'Herbault (1560-1629). Letters from both Phélypeaux and Louis XIII to various European states are transcribed into the register.
Date of production taken from title and dates of transcribed letters.
401 of the leaves are numbered in ink, the final one being blank. 216 and 306 have been omitted in numbering, but the text is continuous.
Includes contents table after the title page: despatches are arranged by month and then by country.
Written in a professional hand.
Binding bears the arms of Gaspard de Fieubet de Naulac (1626-1694). See British Library database of bookbindings. Eton's printed copy of Les negotiations de Monsieur le President Ieannin. -- Paris : Chez Pierre le Petit, 1656, also has a binding of de Naulac, and came via Mann.

17th century red morocco; gold tooled frames of single and double fillets; ornaments at each corner of inner frame, with cartouches bearing an 'AV' monogram; gold stamped centrepiece of armorial device of Gaspard de Fieubet de Naulac (possibly added later); gold tooled bead roll on board edges; gold tooled roll on turn ins; gold tooled frames of single and double fillets on spine, with 'AV' monograms and title; gilt ends; red, black and yellow nonpareil marbled endpapers.
